F8 facebook changesFacebook has made some changes recently that have split the user base as to whether or not they “like” the changes or not.  People are naturally adverse to change, but in this fast-paced Social Media world, “a change is a comin’ “.

If you use Facebook and Social Media for Business, as I do, it’s important to keep up with the changes and use them to your advantage before your competition does.  I thought I would take a look at some of the items you should look at more closely and hopefully help you to understand some of the features and terminology a little better.

Subscribe Options:

To clarify what “Subscribe” actually does, you are already “Subscribed” to your friends.  If you “Subscribe to others on facebook you are essentially seeing their posts (hopefully of interest and value to you) delivered to your feed.  They will not be able to see your posts.

Privacy Settings:

Facebook is rolling out the Timeline feature.  When it becomes available to you, before publishing your Timeline, go to Privacy and select the “Limit Audience for Past Posts”.  Use this link to be notified when they release it https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline.  From there you can select “Friends” or “Friends of Friends” instead of public…your choice here.

Photo Privacy:

You can change the audience to who see a particular photo.  The Audience Selector always filters who will be able to see the photo, even if someone clicks the “share” link.

…Just remember when adding content to facebook to only share what you are fine to know that everyone has the potential to see.

Default Privacy:

Always check your default mobile privacy settings if you post from mobile apps, such as facebook for iPhone and Blackberry.

Share Button:

NOTE:  The “Share” button on facebook = re-tweeting on Twitter

Facebook Pages Changes:

Facebook has chose to do away with FBML (facebook markup language) for Pages.  This will instead be replaced with Iframes, which supports content that is hosted on your own web hosted server.  Also, As of October 1, 2011 facebook is requiring the hosting service to support SSL security (Secure Sockets Layer).  More info can be found here.

More to come on Timelines and how to customize the top Facebook Cover photo and more!
